Epilepsy is a brain disorder  marked by recurrent seizures or fits. This condition have been observed to affect people of all ages and each person have their own set of concerns and problem to deal with.( www.jagranjosh.com)

- Genetic influence

- Head trauma( from accident or fall)

- Factors in the brain( Brain tumor)

- infections (Meningitis, Hiv)

- injury before birth 

- Developmental conditions( Autism, Attention deficit hyperactive disorder ADHD)

MYTHS AND FACTS ABOUT EPILEPSY


MYTH:you will swallow your tongue during a seizure.


FACT:it is impossible to swallow your tongue.


MYTH: You must force something into the mouth of someone having epileptic seizures.


FACT: you might injure the person in the process of doing that, just lie the person on the side.


MYTH:You should restrain someone having a seizure.


FACT: Never hold a person having seizures, it may cause bone or muscle injury. Just clear the surrounding of any harmful object and put a pillow or a soft cloth under the head.


MYTH: Epilepsy is contagious.


FACT: you can't have epilepsy by staying close to an epileptic patient.


MYTH: During epileptic seizures the person is in pain.


FACT: During seizures the person is unconscious and does not feel any pain.


MYTH: People with epilepsy should not have jobs with responsibility and stress.


FACT: People with epilepsy can have successful career in different profession.


MYTH: if you have seizures you have epilepsy.


FACT: seizures can occur in different medical conditions other than epilepsy.


MANAGEMENT

- Therapies that stimulates the brain using device.

While we cannot completely deal with problems relating to epilepsy, we can actually reduce the number of seizures or fits.

Adhere to your medication, identify your triggers and avoid them. Epilepsy should not prevent you from achieving your goals.
